Days of our Paws - Resident Story of the Week

My name is Moe and I'm a handsome fellow. I am a male born in 2006 who came from a very crowded house. I can be a little shy and like to hang out at my discretion but when you look like me, well, you can be picky. I like other cats and dogs.

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet was founded in 1977 by a small group of Toledo residents in response to the vast overpopulation of stray and abandoned animals in our community. Save-A-Pet received its charter as a non-profit organization in 1978 and the current system of foster home care was created shortly afterward. Today, Save-A-Pet is more than 450 members strong with an open to the public animal shelter and a foster home network. Since our inception, Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet has placed thousands of kittens, puppies, cats, and  dogs in loving, permanent homes.

  • Non profit, no-kill organization
  • 85.65% of all donations directly benefit homeless animals in the Toledo area
  • Responsible adoptions

Our Mission

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet was founded on the belief that every companion animal deserves a loving, responsible and permanent home. In short, no animal homeless, and no animal unloved, abused or neglected.

To fulfill that mission, Save-A-Pet:

  • Offers spay and neuter assistance
  • Promotes responsible pet ownership among the public
  • Seeks responsible, permanent homes for our animals

Resident of the Month

Hope

On one of our rare cold December days, our shelter staff made a startling discovery outside the shelter.  Wrapped in a blanket and tucked into the planter bench on the shelter porch was a 6 – 8 week old female pit bull puppy.  Not only was the puppy malnourished, but she was just about hairless and covered with red scabby bumps over her entire body due to demodectic mange (thankfully not contagious to humans or other animals).  She was truly a pathetic sight.  Suggestions by our facebook followers led to the name Hope, representing our hope that the mange could be eliminated and she could find a forever home.

Hope went to a foster home for isolation and there her foster mom discovered that Hope was truly one of the sweetest, most loving puppies ever.  Every night she cuddled up in bed with her foster mom, draped across her neck or snuggled up beside her and was pretty much glued to her side.  She quickly got the hang of pottying outside and learned to love her Frosty Paws ice cream.  Her foster mom, her doctors, and everyone who met her was completely smitten.  And as her silvery tan coat came in, we could see that she was going to be a beauty, with a white chest and faint brindle markings.

After five weeks in her foster home, Hope was cleared to go to the shelter and meet the dogs.  It was pretty much love at first sight for Hope and the shelter dogs and now she’s a full-fledged member of the pack and ready for adoption. Stop by and meet Hope and the other dogs (Hope gratefully accepts all donations of Frosty Paws!)
